NHL planning shortened lockout due to COVID
Gary Bettman trying to assert dominance in the ongoing talks with the players union |
Bettman continued to stress that even though the coming lockout will not have the same impact on the players as they would have liked, he still expected the NHLPA to approach the lockout as if it would draw out for almost half a year. "In times like these it's important that we all contribute what we can, and so I expect the players to yield to all of managements demands as they would be forced to under a normal lockout". He further conceded that the lack of financial strength could be perceived as putting the owners at a considerable disadvantage in the upcoming collective bargaining agreement negotiations, but added "It really isn't fair for the players to take advantage of the owners weak bargaining position since things would likely have been different if it wasn't for COVID".
Asked about his reaction to Bettman's comments, NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said "We look forward to the three week lockout. This break will fulfill our long-standing request for a mid season break for the players". When pressed on whether the player's union would consider Bettman's appeal to treat the lockout as a serious work stoppage, Fehr responded by using his tongue to protrude his lower lip and making noises akin to those of a chimpanzee.
